I recently started fresh with a new HD, and I discovered that when I tried to re-install my previous purchases from the App Store, if the app was currently at a version not supported by Lion, then I get a message: '(App) can't be installed on 'OS X Lion' because Mac OS X version 10.8 or later is required.'
